 Captain Vivian Sumner Simpson   1883 – 1918

12th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment

Clevedon Salerooms June Specialist Sale included an important First World War Military Cross medal group awarded to Captain Vivian Sumner Simpson of the 12th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment.  Prior to the war Simpson played football for Sheffield Wednesday and notably scored a hat-trick against Manchester United.

This historically important collection included some ninety letters and photographs sent by Captain Simpson to his Brother from the front.   Described as the most popular man in the regiment, Simpson played a leading part in the attack on the Cordona Trench, as the London Gazette reported; ‘He was the first man into the enemy trench and was involved in hand-to-hand combat with the defenders’.  Wounded in 1917, Simpson soon returned to the front, despite the option to stay in England in a training role.  On the 13th April 1918 Simpson was shot by snipers.  He is buried in the village cemetery at Outtersteene, West of Lille.

Prior to the sale Clevedon Salerooms contacted the Sheffield Museum service and the York’s & Lancaster Regimental Museum.  The lot attracted much interest and sold for £6,950 to a private buyer, bidding with the express intention of securing it for the Regimental Museum.
