YONGZHENG period ‘Dragon’ Dish (1723 – 1735).

Sold at Auction on Thursday 9th March 2006 for £52,050

A RARE YONGZHENG MARK & PERIOD IRON-RED & UNDERGLAZE BLUE DECORATED 'DRAGON' DISH (1723 - 1735)

The finely potted body with interior decorated with a large iron-red five-clawed dragon encircling a flaming pearl against a background of blue and white cresting waves. The rounded well with four further iron-red dragons one with wings, one with elephant's trunk, two of whom have three claws, the other two with five claws, all emitting flaming tendrils from their sinuous bodies and set amidst blue and white swirling clouds. The rim with a band of rolling waves. The reverse with a repeat of the four dragons in a band enclosed by double-line borders. The Yongzheng six character mark in two columns within a double circle, 48cm diameter.

Provenance: From a local property purchased by the vendor's father at a Country House sale in the English Midlands during the 1920's. Bears a torn paper label to the reverse almost certainly in the hand of the vendor's father and probably applied shortly after he purchased the piece inscribed: 'Collier's in London have the fellow to (this) dish priced £40'. Only four closely related Yongzheng period examples of this dish appear to be recorded. The most recent sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong 23rd October 2005 Lot 208, one is displayed in the Umezawa Kinenkan, Tokyo, a third sold at Sotheby's London 6th December 1994 Lot 179 and a fourth sold at Christie's London 10th April 1978 Lot 49
