May 2012 Specialist Sale Report

Menagerie at Clevedon Salerooms

Many of the top lots at Clevedon Salerooms May Specialist sale had a common theme. Amongst the jewellery section a gold Cartier Clip formed as a terrier with ruby eyes and articulated head soon had collectors on the scent eager to secure the 4cm tearaway.  On the day of the sale many bidders went home with their tails between their legs and it was left to the top dog to secure the brooch for a mouth-watering £4,150.

Holding water was this diminutive Minton majolica ewer formed as a frog wrestling with a dolphin.  Dated to 1861 this 15cm high jug caused something of a splash as bidders wrestled over the lot, the victor landing both frog and dolphin for £3,650.

Leading the furniture was this particularly elegant 19th Century English burr walnut and ormolu mounted Bonheur du jour having inset Sevres type porcelain panels.  Quality always commands high prices and this 123cm wide writing desk found a new home for £6,350.

The collectors’ items included this fierce looking Franz Bergman cold painted bronze of a female warrior with assegai and shield.  At 29cm to the tip of her assegai, only the bravest of bidders took her on, the victor paying £3,650 to try and placate her!
